Problem Solving, Part 3
We set up in the normal golf stance to achieve balance, and we transfer our weight to our back foot as we wind up (rotate) and then to our front foot as we unwind (rotate) to hit the ball. But, we find out that this doesn't work. We did not establish the front side as post before we rotated. The transfer of weight back to the front involves movement. When the gofer makes the rearward rotation in preparation to swing he is storing energy. Before this energy is released the golfer must establish one fixed post shoulders are the driving forces of the golf swing and these forces must be controlled by one post from the start of the swing. That post is the front side. If you have not shifted your weight to your front side prior to beginning your swing, the rotational movement is held back by two posts, and will move the apex of your club arc back in your stance. You will never swing from the inside with accuracy and consistency.
As I said before, the golf swing is really two arms blended into a one-arm swing. The left arm swings (through contact, then both arms are straight together briefly, and then the right takes over to finish the swing) while the remainder of the body and the other arm provides stability and rotation. To assure that the left side (post) is fixed and is the point around which the swing will rotate, the weight must be transferred to the left side prior to the beginning of the golf swing. The front shoulder becomes the ball joint from which the arm swings, and the front hip becomes the axis on which the post (side) rotates. The apex of the arc will follow the center of mass across the golfer's body. This meant that the center of mass would have to be opposite the ball when the ball was struck, or the swing arc will be approaching from an out-to-in path.
Laura's Law was formulated for a pendulum arc of 66 inches (length of the driver and left arm combined) and a center point located at the left shoulder. We considered the left side of the golfer as the pole. The center point of the arc begins in the middle of the golfer, just opposite the chin, when the weight is evenly distributed, and will move toward the rear shoulder (away from the pole) when the golfer shifts his weight to the back foot. A formula was developed to determine how far outside the ball-target line the club head would theoretically go if the weight was not shifted to the front foot prior to beginning the golf swing.
Now for example, if the center point remains at the chin and is not shifted to the front shoulder by transferring the weight, it will create a 5.4 degree out-to-in swing at the contact point.
Laura's Law: Eighty percent of the weight must he transferred to the lead footprior to beginning the golf swing to effectively establish the post-pendulum relationship necessary to avoid the out-to-in swing path. Degrees off center = arc tan(x in/66 in)*57 deg/rad, where the pendulum arc = arm and club, and x = length in inches between the person's belly button and front leg.
With this explanation, many of you probably now understand the source of your frustration. Golf is a speed game and not a power game. When you think of swinging a golf club, think of throwing a baseball. When you release a baseball the weight is on the front foot. It's the same for golf. Move your weight to the front foot before you swing and you will soon see positive results. Now lets talk about potential problems.
